چکیده

A real-life motorway in Belgium is studied and a comparison is made between a simulation of a morning rush hour situation without control and a simulation of a morning rush hour situation with ramp metering implemented. Two types of controllers are compared: a traditional ALINEA based controller and a model predictive control based ramp metering controller. In order to evaluate the controllers in a realistic framework, the simulations presented in this paper are based on real-life traffic measurements, and constraints on the maximal allowed queue lengths at the on-ramps are imposed. The presented simulations are indicative for the reduction in the total time spent (on the studied motorway and on the on-ramps) that can be achieved by ramp metering during a typical morning rush hour.

Model predictive control with repeated model fitting for ramp metering

In this paper we deal with model predictive control for ramp metering on motorways. A discussion of the way ramp metering tries to prevent, or postpone, congestion on a motorway is presented. As an example, a real-life motorway in Belgium is presented. We discuss a traffic flow model that is used in a receding horizon framework and we argue that the quality of the fit of the traffic flow model ...

18 Heavy traffic on a controlled motorway

Unlimited access to a motorway network can, in overloaded conditions, cause a loss of capacity. Ramp metering (signals on slip roads to control access to the motorway) can help avoid this loss of capacity. The design of ramp metering strategies has several features in common with the design of access control mechanisms in communication networks. Inspired by models and rate control mechanisms de...

Ramp Metering in the Netherlands: an Overview

Dynamic traffic management is an important part of the Dutch transport policy. All kinds of measures have been implemented and assessed on the motorway network, such as the motorway traffic management system with speed limits and queue tail warning, ramp metering, variable message signs, dedicated lanes, peak lanes, incident management, etc. In this paper the focus is on ramp metering, which is...

The Use of Cooperative Approach in Ramp Metering

To ensure higher Level of Service (LoS) at urban motorways, new traffic control concepts are being applied since in most cases there is no available space for infrastructural build-up. For urban motorways, the mostly used control methods are ramp metering combined with additional control methods like variable speed limit control (VSLC). This paper gives a review of the current ramp metering app...
